The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has protected consumers from deceptive or unfair business practices that include things like fraud, scams, false advertising, identity theft, pyramid schemes, medical quackery, and bogus investments, to name a few, for more than a century.

On January 25, 2022, the FTC issued reinforced guidance, which “gives key principles for collecting, moderating, and publishing reviews in ways that don’t mislead consumers.” In a nutshell, the FTC aims to discourage reviews that are:

  • Segmented and submitted through a practice that solicits exclusively from high NPS raters or those who are expected to only leave positive reviews
  • Awarded an incentive with the condition that the review is positive
  • Overtly tagged with an incentivized review mark when solicited as such
  • Fake or suspicious or from a non-user or non-customer of the product

You can read more about the FTC's guidelines and how TrustRadius helps you meet them in our blog post, FTC Incentivized Review Guidelines: Welcome to the Party!

Using Incentivized Reviews Outside of TrustRadius.com

TrustRadius offers several products that enable customers to leverage the voice of the customer in their own marketing and sales channels. Based on the FTC's guidance, we've enhanced these features to indicate when a quote or snippet from a review that was incentivized is being used. There are 4 primary ways TrustRadius customers can leverage quotes that will include this incentivized review indicator:

1. TrustQuotes for Web

The TrustQuotes for Web syndication widget is a self-serve digital widget filled with customer quotes from reviews on TrustRadius. The widget can be deployed across your website to help drive higher conversion and engagement. The TrustQuotes for Web widget pulls quotes and will now display whether those quotes came from an incentivized review.

2. TrustQuotes API

If you leverage the public TrustQuotes API to retrieve your products' tagged quotes, two fields will be included in the API response to provide information on whether a quote came from an incentivized review.

  1. The field "Incentivized" will have a value of "TRUE" if the quote is from an incentivized review and "FALSE" if the quote came from a review which was not incentivized.
  2. The "IncentiveSource" field will indicate who provided the incentive when one was given.
    1. When an incentive was provided, you will see one of the following values: "TrustRadius, Vendor, Third Party."
    2. When "Incentivized" is "False", the value for "Incentive Source" will be "No."

3. TrustQuotes Export

From the TrustRadius vendor portal, customers have the ability to export all of their TrustQuotes to a CSV. Under TrustQuotes > TrustQuotes Library > Export you can download a CSV that includes two columns with information on whether a quote came from an incentivized review.

  1. The "Incentivized" column will indicate "TRUE" if the quote is from an incentivized review and "FALSE" if the quote came from a review which was not incentivized.
  2. The "Incentive Source" column will indicate who provided the incentive when one was given.
    1. When an incentive was provided, you will see one of the following values: "TrustRadius, Vendor, Third Party."
    2. When "Incentivized" is "False", the value for "Incentive Source" will be "No."

4. TrustRadius Quote Finder Chrome Extension

The TrustRadius Quote Finder for Sales Reps Chrome Extension enables your team to find quotes from customer reviews and to use them in presentations, emails, and more. The extension enables users to search for quotes and copy-paste them without ever leaving your browser. Now, those quotes will indicate if they came from an Incentivized Review (pictured below).
